
Anbu Illam Free Residential Higher Secondary School was the first initiative of Anbu illam, inaugurated at Sr. Cesilia Memorial English Medium School in Aruguvilai, located within the vicinity of Nagercoil town. The Correspondent, Rev. Fr. B. Russel Raj, appointed Mr. Antony Edison as a teacher and this one-teacher school was started with six deaf children on June 5, 1995.
On June 5, 1996, the school was relocated to land purchased by Anbu Illam at Anbu Nagar, 48B-5 Paramarthalingapuram, Nagercoil – 629 003. The children began staying on the campus, and a cook was appointed to care for them.
Eventually, the number of children increased, more qualified teachers with special T.T.C. and a special B.Ed. were appointed, and the school was recognized by the State Government as a High school and later as a Higher Secondary school.
The children from different districts of Tamil Nadu were admitted to this school, where they received a proper education. Over the years, all students who studied at this school passed their public examinations. The “Best Institution Certificate” was awarded to Anbu Illam by the District Collector.
The school uses the oral method for all communications. At every district-level Disabled Day celebration, our children win several prizes in sports and games. After their school years, the students went to colleges to pursue their graduation. Many former students are employed in companies as accountants and in other jobs. They visit Anbu illam for the Alumni Association, where they express their deep appreciation and gratitude to Anbu illam.
